Pepcid is used for treatment and prevention of ulcers and heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach. It is also used to treat GERD. Drug UsesPepcid is used for treatment and prevention of ulcers and heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach. It is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), conditions that cause increased acid secretion, and esophagitis. It also may be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. How TakenTake Pepcid with a glass of water as directed by your doctor. Take Pepcid with or without a meal. Take Pepcid at least 2 hours before or after taking cephalosporins (eg, cephalexin), itraconazole, or ketoconazole. Ask your doctor before taking Pepcid with other acid reducers (antacids). Missed DoseIf you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. More InformationPepcid may cause dizziness. These effects may worsen if Pepcid is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Pepcid with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Pepcid should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. StorageStore Pepcid at 77 °F (25 °C), brief storage at 59 – 86 °F (15 – 30 °C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Pepcid out of the reach of children. Warnings/PrecautionsBefore taking Pepcid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Pepcid, if you have kidney or liver problems, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. Do not use Pepcid if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you are using Pepcid, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.. Some medicines may interact with Pepcid. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Let your doctor know if you have any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. If pain continues or you need to take Pepcid for more than 14 days for heartburn symptoms, stop use and contact your doctor. You may need to make significant diet and lifestyle changes to help treat and prevent ulcers and other digestive problems, including stress–reduction programs, exercise, and diet changes. Lab tests may be performed to monitor your progress. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug.
