Aldactone (Spironolactone)Synonims: Spironolactone
Aldactone is used for treatment of edema (swelling), hypertension (high blood pressure), potassium deficiency and hyperaldosteronism. Drug UsesAldactone is in a class of drugs called potassium sparing diuretics (water pill). It reduces the amount of fluid in your body without causing the loss of potassium. Aldactone is used for treatment of edema (swelling) and hypertension (high blood pressure). Aldactone is also used to treat potassium deficiency and hyperaldosteronism (a hormonal disorder). How TakenAldactone comes as a tablet to take orally. The general dosage is a tablet a day, taken in the morning with a meal or taken two times a day with breakfast and lunch. This medicine does not cure, it only controls blood pressure levels, therefore, continue taking Aldactone even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Aldactone your doctor`s approval. Missed DoseIf you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. More InformationAldactone can also be used in combination with other medicines for treatment of precocious puberty or myasthenia gravis. Aldactone can also be used for treatment of female patients with abnormal facial hair. Consult your doctor about the possible risks of using this medicine for your condition. StorageStore this medication at room temperature 15–30°C (59–86°F). Keep away from children and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Warnings/PrecautionsYou might not be able to take Aldactone, or you may need a dosage adjustment or monitoring during your treatment if you have any of the following conditions- kidney or liver disease, diabetes mellitus, have high levels of potassium in your blood, or are taking a potassium supplement or an angiotensinconvertingenzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor). Aldactone is in the FDA pregnancy category D, which means that there is positive evidence of human fetal risk, but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk (e.g., if the drug is needed in a life–threatening situation or for a serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective). It is not known if Aldactone passes into breast milk, therefore, do not take Aldactone if you are pregnant, likely to become pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
